Kyoto works best when you group sights by direction instead of zigzagging across town. These plans follow that rule, with real opening hours, fees and travel times.

Plan Kyoto by direction, not by famous name

The tourism association's access map measures distances from Kyoto Station: Fushimi Inari-taisha is 10 minutes away, Saga and Arashiyama 25, Higashiyama with Kiyomizu-dera 35, Kinkaku-ji 40 and Ohara 60.6,7,8,9,4 Those numbers describe four directions and one far day, and every itinerary below is built from them.

Mixing directions costs time. The association says the key to sightseeing in Kyoto is good use of trains and buses, and that a route from a general map app can take more than twice as long because of traffic jams and congestion.10,11 A sensible day therefore stays in one corner of the city, with a train or subway ride at the start and the end.

Two habits make any plan work. Start early, since the association counts morning sightseeing as before 9:00 AM and gives summer sunrise as around 5:00 AM.12,13 And leave one slot a day empty, because Kyoto rewards a side street or a tea stop more than a fully packed list does. Write the day's anchor sight first, add one neighbor within walking distance, and let everything else be optional.

A short stay: east side one day, gates and bamboo the next

Spend the first day on Higashiyama. The association's sample itinerary Higashiyama at Dawn runs from Kiyomizu-dera Temple to Yasaka-jinja Shrine and Gion, and Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00 a.m.16,1 The Main Hall stands on a cliff of Mt. Otowa and was reconstructed in 1633, and the Nio-mon gate is about 14 meters high.17,18

In the evening walk Gion with a guide. A 2-hour Gion walking tour starts from $19 and is rated 4.75 from 4,501 reviews, and a 100-minute night walk limited to 10 participants starts from $17. Photography is prohibited in many Gion areas, so ask your guide where you may point a camera.19

The second day takes the southern and western gates. Fushimi Inari-taisha is the quick one at 10 minutes from Kyoto Station, with around 10,000 torii along its mountain paths.6,14 Arashiyama follows, with Tenryu-ji open from 8:30am to 5:00pm and garden admission of 500 yen for high school students and older.15,20 If you would rather not plan the transfer, the coach day described below does both in a single outing.

A long weekend: add the north and the center

A third day moves north and into the middle of town. Kinkaku-ji is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and the temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.2,22 The path is wheelchair-accessible up to the Golden Pavilion, but the garden beyond has steps, so strollers must turn back.21

Ginkaku-ji is open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from March 1 to November 30 and 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from December 1 to February 28.23 Nijo-jo Castle charges 800 yen for adults, or 1,300 yen with the Ninomaru-goten Palace, and viewing the Honmaru-goten Palace needs a web ticket bought in advance.3,24

The Kyoto Imperial Palace is open to all visitors and needs no advance application.25 A 3-hour small-group walking tour covers Nijo Castle for 1 hour and the Imperial Palace for 1 hour, from $48, and expects modest dress on the palace grounds.

A full week's pace: slower days and one far trip

With a week you can stop rushing. Use one day for Ohara, which the association's map puts 60 minutes from Kyoto Station.4 Use another for one of its sample itineraries, A Day in Fushimi on the canals, or a tour of hidden temples in the Saga Arashiyama area.26,27

A hands-on day fills the gaps between temples. A 45-minute tea ceremony in a garden tea house near Kiyomizu-dera starts from $49 and is rated 4.85 from 4,282 reviews, while a 1-day kimono rental with hairstyling starts from $21. Both are short enough to slot around a morning or an evening plan.

Keep one day open for the weather. The rainy season runs between early June and mid-July, and a rest day indoors, for example in the Kyoto Aquarium or the Kyoto International Manga Museum, suits that.28,29,30 Ask your accommodation about hands-free luggage delivery so you can travel light between areas.31

If you only have a day: the coach loop

One day is enough for a first taste if you accept a fast pace. Our coach day lists 8.5 to 9 hours, with Kiyomizu-dera for 1 hour, Sanjusangen-do for 40 minutes, lunch in Arashiyama for 50 minutes, the bamboo forest for 20 minutes, Tenryuji for 30 minutes, Kinkaku-ji for 40 minutes and Fushimi Inari Taisha for 1 hour.

It starts at 8:00 AM in front of Tully's Coffee at Kyoto Avanti, with check-in at 7:50 AM, and returns around 4:30 to 5:00 PM. Entry tickets for four temples are included, from $97.

The same loop works as the first day of a longer stay. Pair it with a slower second day on the east side, and you have seen the big names without spending your whole trip on transfers. Anything that felt rushed on the coach can then be revisited on foot, at your own speed, with the tickets and the timings already known.

The ultimate Kyoto itinerary for three days

Moving between days: passes, taxis and night buses

The city's Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass costs 1,100 yen for adults and 550 yen for children, and it is only usable on the day it is activated.5,32 A subway-only pass costs 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children.33 Count your rides before buying, because a pass pays off only on a day with several trips. On a day spent walking a single neighborhood, single fares may cost less, so decide each morning once you know where you are heading.

After dark, the Yoru Bus runs from Kawaramachi and Gion to Kyoto Station until 10:50 PM, and many trains run until around midnight.34 If you take a taxi, use only authorized taxis with green license plates or official ride-hailing apps.35

Kyoto has over 1.4 million residents who go about daily life among visitors, so keep your voice down on residential lanes.36 That matters most in the evenings, when you are likely to be walking through quiet neighborhoods back to your hotel.
