Our guide explained the landmarks and the history well and stayed helpful all day. I would happily recommend this tour to friends.

In the summer heat the air-conditioned coach made it possible with our kids, and a guide steering us the whole time helped a lot.

It is fast paced but you see everything, and the guide kept reminding us to drink water. Expect a lot of walking and some steps.

The coach was comfortable, the timing held, and the whole day felt well organized from the first stop to the last one.

We saw so much in one day that we could never have managed alone, and the air conditioning was a relief on a hot day.

A great Kyoto day: the guide was knowledgeable and friendly, and she taught us a few useful Japanese phrases on the way.
the day in detail
This is a coach day of 8.5 to 9 hours with a live guide in English. Check-in is at 7:50 AM and the coach leaves at 8:00 AM from in front of Tully's Coffee at Kyoto Avanti, with the return around 4:30 to 5:00 PM. You do not buy temple tickets one by one or study bus numbers; the order of the day is set and the guide explains each stop.
The stops are Kiyomizu-dera for 1 hour, Sanjusangen-do for 40 minutes, lunch in Arashiyama for 50 minutes, the Sagano Bamboo Forest for 20 minutes, Tenryuji for 30 minutes, Kinkaku-ji for 40 minutes, a pass-by of Nijo Castle and Fushimi Inari Taisha for 1 hour. That is a lot of Kyoto in one day, at tour pace.
If you are searching for things to do in Kyoto beyond a coach, our guides cover tea ceremony, kimono rental, Gion walks, food tours and more. Think of this day as the overview that shows you which of those you will want to come back for.

why kyoto
Kyoto was the imperial capital after Emperor Kanmu moved it here in 794, and the city still carries that history in its temples, gardens and festivals. Kiyomizu-dera alone has more than 1250 years behind it, standing halfway up Mount Otowa in the Higashiyama range.
Several stops on this tour belong to the UNESCO World Heritage listing for ancient Kyoto. Kinkaku-ji was designated in 1994, and Tenryu-ji is registered as one too. Fushimi Inari Taisha dates from 711 and is the head shrine of the Inari shrines found across Japan.
A single day cannot cover all of that, and the tour does not pretend to. What it gives you is the shape of the place: gold, vermilion, stone and bamboo, in an order that a coach can drive.

tickets and lunch
Entry tickets for Kiyomizudera, Tenryuji, Kinkakuji and Sanju-san-gen-do are included, along with a guide, an air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi and audio headsets in other languages. A Japanese buffet lunch is included only if you select that option.
Not included are tips, additional food and drinks, and hotel pick-up and drop-off. The buffet has one menu for all guests, with no halal, vegan, gluten-free or allergy-friendly meals, so guests with those needs are told to book without lunch.
Add-ons chosen on the day are charged more, so choose lunch in advance if you want it. Bring yen for drinks and snacks in Arashiyama.

the Kyoto year
The Kyoto City Tourism Association calls spring and autumn the most comfortable times for tourism. Kiyomizu-dera gives late March to early April for cherry blossoms and mid-November to early December for autumn leaves.
Between early June and mid-July Kyoto sees a lot of rainfall, and midsummer temperatures often rise above 35 degrees. On this tour the coach is air-conditioned and has Wi-Fi, which matters in July and August.
Winter is cold, with temperatures that can fall below 5 degrees, but Kyoto does not receive much snow. Our best-time guide has the month-by-month numbers if you are still choosing dates.

what travelers say
The tour is rated 4.80 from 5,210 reviews. In the reviews we read, the guide is the subject that returns most often: knowledgeable, friendly and good at explaining the landmarks and the history while the coach moves between stops.
Practical praise follows. Reviewers like the air-conditioned coach on hot days, the way the timing held, and how much they saw in a single day. One family with young children said the cool coach and a guide steering them made a summer day possible.
Honest notes appear too. One reviewer called it fast paced with a lot of walking and some steps, and another noted that you will not spend hours at each stop. That matches a tour that fits so many stops into one day, so choose it for the overview, not for lingering.

Kiyomizudera, Tenryuji, Kinkakuji and Sanju-san-gen-do tickets are in the price.
The coach returns to the meeting point around 4:30 to 5:00 PM.

The listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments.
Order and places can change with traffic or weather, and a closed place gets an alternative.
heat and pace
Each stop is timed, and the listing says the order of the itinerary can change with traffic, weather or operational reasons. A closed place is replaced with an alternative one. Treat the schedule as a plan, not a promise.
You walk up stairs and hills during the day. In summer, carry water and use the lunch break and the coach to cool down; the association notes that Kyoto's mountains block cooling winds, so the air stays hot and humid.
Luggage and strollers can be brought on the tour, but the listing says it is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments. If walking is a concern, say so before you book.
See the slots, no-fee cancelThe gates, counted
Around 10,000 torii line the mountain paths.
They stand along the mountain paths of Fushimi Inari Taisha, which has been a shrine since 711 and is the head shrine of the Inari shrines.
the order of stops
Kiyomizu-dera stands on a cliff of Mt. Otowa, and its Main Hall was reconstructed in 1633. The Nio-mon gate at its entrance is about 14 meters high. The temple opens at 6:00 a.m., though the tour arrives later in the morning.
In Arashiyama the tour offers a lunch stop, the Sagano Bamboo Forest and Tenryuji. Tenryu-ji garden admission is 500 yen for high school students and older, and the tour includes that ticket.
Kinkaku-ji is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Fushimi Inari Taisha ends the day, with around 10,000 torii gateways of all sizes along its mountain paths. The sun is lower by then, which suits the red of the gates.

kit to carry
Be at the meeting point for the 7:50 AM check-in, because the coach departs at 8:00 AM and latecomers and no-shows get no refund or change. Look for the operator's green and white flag.
Wear comfortable shoes for stairs and hills, and a light layer for cool mornings in spring and autumn. In summer add a hat and water, and in the rainy season an umbrella.
Carry cash in yen. Many small purchases at temples, such as charms and snacks, are easiest in cash, and you will want a drink at the Arashiyama stop.

who guides you
The live guide speaks English. Audio headsets are available for guides in Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese and Ukrainian, so a mixed group can follow the same day in different languages.
Expect the guide to manage the clock as well as tell the story. The coach leaves on schedule, and the listing says stop times and order can shift with traffic, so listen for the return time at every stop.
If you want more depth at one place, such as a longer Gion evening or a tea ceremony, treat the coach day as a scouting trip and book a slower activity for another day.

going solo
You can do the same sights by public transport. The tourism association says the key to sightseeing in Kyoto is to make good use of trains and buses, and warns that a route from a general map app can take more than twice as long because of traffic jams.
Its access map gives Fushimi Inari-taisha 10 minutes from Kyoto Station, Saga and Arashiyama 25, Higashiyama 35 and Kinkaku-ji 40. A Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass costs 1,100 yen for adults and is only usable on the day it is activated.
The trade is clear: a pass is cheaper, but you do the routing and buy the entries. Our itinerary guide plans a short stay, a long weekend and a slow week if you prefer to go it alone.
See the slots, no-fee cancelfair warnings
It suits first-time visitors who want the headline sights without planning, travelers who like a guide and a fixed order, and anyone who would rather not handle four separate ticket queues.
It suits you less if you want to linger. Stops run from 20 minutes at the bamboo forest to 1 hour at Kiyomizu-dera and Fushimi Inari, and the coach leaves on time. It is also a long day of 8.5 to 9 hours, with stairs and hills.
If that is not for you, a small-group tour by train, a Gion walk or a private day may suit better. Cancel free up to 24 hours before if your plans change, or reserve now and pay later.
