The Arashiyama bamboo forest in Kyoto is a short walk on a public path with a lot of famous neighbors. This guide covers the entrance fee question, the way there and the hours when it feels like a forest.

What you are walking into

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove lines a 400 meter path that runs between Nonomiya Shrine and Okochi Sanso Villa.1 Walking from Nonomiya toward Okochi Sanso is uphill, so the gentlest direction is the other way.6 The Tenryu-ji north gate opens onto the same road, which also leads on to Okochi Sanso Villa, Jojakko-ji and Rakushisha.7

The Sagano Scenic Railway writes that especially in the morning and evening, when the light streams in, the atmosphere is so magical and beautiful that it is tempting to capture it in a photograph or painting.5 That is the reason to spend the early hours here rather than the lunch hour. The Kyoto City Tourism Association lists the grove among its places for a calm early-morning visit.8

Be realistic about how short the path is. It takes minutes to cross at a walking pace, and the place only becomes a forest if you arrive when others have not. Pair it with the temple, the villa and the bridge, and the visit stretches to a half day without feeling padded. Treat the Arashiyama bamboo forest Kyoto draws visitors to as a short stop inside a longer Arashiyama day.

The entrance fee question, answered line by line

People ask for the Arashiyama bamboo forest entrance fee, and the useful answer is a list. The official pages we read state no admission charge for walking the path itself; they state fees for the places around it. Nonomiya Shrine has free entry.13 Tenryu-ji garden-only admission is 500 yen for high school students and older and 300 yen for elementary and middle school students, with preschoolers free.2

Entering the Tenryu-ji halls as well as the garden costs 300 yen more than the garden-only price, and the Cloud Dragon painting in the Dharma Hall costs an extra 500 yen.15,16 Okochi Sanso Villa charges 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for elementary to junior high school students, and the fee includes matcha green tea and sweets.17,12

The evening light-up runs on the organizers' own terms, so look up its hours, price and payment terms on their page before you go. Rakushisha is 300 yen and Iwatayama Monkey Park 800 yen for adults, and the monkey park takes cash only.18,19,20 Keep coins handy, because several of these gates do not take cards.

Getting here from Kyoto Station and downtown

The direct train is the JR Sagano Line, rapid or local, which takes about 11 minutes from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station, although JNTO describes it as a 15-minute ride.3,29 The Sagano platform is further away than other lines at Kyoto Station and the front cars are crowded, so boarding from the back of the platform is advised.30 The grove is a 10-minute walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.4

A less crowded route uses the subway and the tram. The Karasuma Line to Karasuma Oike and the Tozai Line to Uzumasa Tenjingawa takes about 20 minutes and costs 260 yen for adults, and the Randen ride from Randen-Tenjingawa to Arashiyama takes about 15 minutes and costs 250 yen.21,22 The Kyoto Subway & Randen 1-Day Ticket costs 1,300 yen, adult only.31 From the Keifuku Arashiyama terminal it is about a 4-minute walk to Togetsukyo Bridge.32

By Hankyu, change at Katsura Station to the Hankyu Arashiyama Line and ride to the last stop, Arashiyama Station.24 City buses 11, 28 and 93 and Kyoto Bus 61, 72 and 83 stop at Arashiyama Tenryu-ji Mae, and the tourism association suggests avoiding bus 11 from Shijo Kawaramachi because Shijo-dori is often congested.25,33

Timing: early starts, the light-up and the crowds

The Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and Togetsukyo Bridge are described as always crowded with people trying to take the best possible shots.76 Because Arashiyama draws crowds in cherry blossom and autumn leaf seasons, the tourism association recommends going early in the morning and using the relatively empty route through Kameyama Park to the Bamboo Grove Road.26 Kyoto Sightseeing Navi publishes a comfort level map showing how crowded popular areas are by time of day, plus live camera feeds.77

The evening alternative is the Arashiyama Bamboo Light-up, called Tsukitouro, which the tourism association lists for 30 Sep to 08 Nov 2026.27 Its hours, ticket terms and rain policy are set by the organizers, so check their page for the day you plan to go, and arrive with the paid area's rules in mind. A moonlit-lantern evening is a different visit from the daytime walk, not a substitute for it.

Know what ended. The December Arashiyama Hanatouro ran for the last time from 10 to 19 December 2021, and Kyoto announced it would end both Arashiyama Hanatouro and Higashiyama Hanatouro, so there is no December Hanatouro today.78,79 Older guidebooks still send visitors to it, and it is worth knowing that the autumn evening event is the Bamboo Light-up instead.

Rules for the path and the light-up

Graffiti carved with a knife has been discovered on some of the bamboo stalks; damaged stalks cannot be repaired and must be cut down, so visitors are asked not to carve them.80 Kyoto City designates 43 areas, including Arashiyama, as Beautification Promotion Areas, and littering there can bring fines of up to 30,000 yen.81

Light-up evenings add rules of their own, set by the organizers: check them before you carry a tripod, a drink or a drone into the paid area. Strollers and wheelchairs need a look at the route first, since some paths in an evening venue can be uneven. By day, the same politeness applies to the lane.

The same politeness applies by day. The path is narrow, so step to the side before you take a photo, and keep to the surface of the path instead of the bamboo edges. A quiet pace is part of the atmosphere the light is famous for, and a shout carries a long way between the canes.

Tenryu-ji, the villa and the bridge

Tenryu-ji opens 8:30am to 5:00pm, with last admission at 4:50pm.9 It was established in 1339 by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo, with Muso Soseki as founding abbot, and it is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.82,83 The Sogenchi Garden, laid out by Muso Soseki, was the first place in Japan designated a Site of Special Historic and Scenic Importance.84

The exit at the back of the Tenryu-ji grounds leads directly to the bamboo grove, so you can pass through the garden and arrive in the forest instead of coming up from the street.85 Tickets are sold at the garden entrance, the main building entrance and the north gate entrance.10 Tenryu-ji is a 5-minute walk from Randen Arashiyama Station and 13 minutes from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station.23

Okochi Sanso Villa is open 9:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:30 and no regular days off, and it covers about 20,000 square meters on the southern incline of Mount Ogura.11,86 Togetsukyo Bridge was first built in 836 and the current one was finished in 1934; it looks wooden but is reinforced concrete with cypress parapets.14 Cormorant fishing is done near the bridge on summer nights.87
