Kyoto's old lanes are made for walking, and a local guide opens doors a map cannot. These are real walking listings, compared on length, group size, languages and from-price.

The short reply
A Kyoto walking tour is useful because the city's most photographed lanes are residential, and the people who own some of them have said enough is enough, which is why photography is prohibited in many Gion areas.2 A guide knows which lanes are open, where to stand and when to move on, and that makes a walking tour a matter of manners as much as of history.
The format also solves a practical problem. Kyoto's buses are slow in traffic, and the tourism association notes that a route found with a general map app can take more than twice as long because of jams.3 A walk stays inside one neighborhood and avoids that problem altogether.
Everything here is a from-price. Treat it as the lowest figure for the cheapest date and option, and expect a private walk or a hike to cost more than a group stroll through Gion.

Plenty of people search for a Kyoto free walking tour. In the listings we compared, none is labeled free; the lowest from-price is $6 for a 2-hour Gion walk with a live guide in English, rated 4.83 from 742 reviews. Read what the price covers before you assume anything about tipping or extras.
There is also an official route. The Kyoto City Tourism Association says you can reserve a private interpreter-guide certified by the City of Kyoto, and that certified guides lead scheduled tours around the city.1 Full certification takes about half a year of training, with an average of 50 guides certified per year.4
For a person rather than a program, the Kyoto Tourist Information Center Kyo Navi sits on the 2nd floor of the JR Kyoto Station Building and is open 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM every day of the year.5 Ask there for maps and for current guided-tour options.

A sunset option lasts 3 hours, with guides in Spanish, French and English, and includes Hanamikoji Street for 30 minutes, local snacks for 20 minutes and Pontocho, finishing at Sanjo Bridge, from $28. The guides wait at most 10 minutes before moving on, so arrive early.

The tourism association's rule is plain: do not stop, touch, follow or take unauthorized photos or videos of any geiko or maiko, because they are not tourist attractions.6 One sunset-walk operator adds that you should keep a distance and use a longer lens, step out of their path if they come close, and offer a smile and a quick bow.
The association also reminds visitors that Kyoto has over 1.4 million residents who go about daily life among visitors, so voices should stay down.7 That matters in the evening, when lanes are quiet and sound carries between wooden houses.
Do not carve into bamboo or other structures on any walk; carving at Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari is criminal property damage with fines up to 300,000 yen.8 A good guide will tell you where you can take photos and where you cannot.
